From Time Out Film Guide

Young Josh (Zegers) is lonely and sullen in his new home, following the death of his father, a test pilot, in a crash. He discovers an abandoned court on the way back from school, spruces it up and starts shooting hoops. Something in the undergrowth returns his ball; Josh tempts out an abandoned and bedraggled dog, Buddy, with potted blancmange, and soon discovers his prodigious ball skills. Hereafter, the plot revolves around whether Josh's mum (Makkena) will let him keep the dog. Ramshackle slapstick, upbeat life lessons and lashings of sentimentality.
