A decidedly black comedy. Andrews is the British war widow who falls for Garner's cowardly marine, who is scheduled (For the Good of the Service) to be the first man to die in the course of the Normandy landings. In one fell swoop, writer Paddy Chayevsky celebrates American hedonism (as the prim Ms Andrews learns to have fun) and attacks the puritan conscience that turns fun into cynicism. The result is Hospital without the gore: witty despite Hiller's direction.Author: PH
