And Soon the Darkness (1970)

From Time Out Film Guide

Unappealing women-in-peril thriller, scripted by Brian Clemens and centred on a young nurse (Franklin) whose holiday companion (Dotrice) is savagely murdered by a sex maniac on a lonely country road as they cycle through France. Predictable, implausible, and not a little nasty.

Posted on Nov 07 2009 21:37 Hi Matt: How's it going? I just wanted you to know I finally posted a scene from "....Darkness," my favorite one, where Cathy wakes up from sunbathing. Check out YouTube, and my Y.T. name is "chalomirof63". It came out pretty well, and I thought of you. Take care, Franny

Posted on Oct 07 2009 18:12 No problem at all yes i can imagine they'll ruin it so yes i'll stick to our classic l saw the music one it would be interesting to find out about the location whether it has changed in the last 40 years.

Posted on Oct 07 2009 18:01 Hey Matt! I just Googled it! Yeah: of course the girls are going to be super-attractive. That doesn't guarantee a good movie! They're going to butcher it as so many remakes are. I'll stick to our classic! And I saw the Y.T. clip where Paul is looking for Jane in the deserted bus at the end. But who would post the very end and give it away? Someone who obviously thinks the sensational and shocking scene is the best one?? Goodness. My favorite part - as I've written - is when Cathy wakes up alone after sunbathing, and you just feel the fear going through her. And there's a nice video of the music with different scenes from the movie. Thanks for leading me to them! Cheers, Fran

Posted on Oct 07 2009 17:43 thanks for mentioning that l have looked up this film on google and the new film is also mentioned they have the poster up already the 2 girls who are the leads are very nice looking whether they will be as good as Pamela Franklin and Michele Dotrice l dont know but they have been in a couple of blockbusters they havent given away too much yet l would imagine France has changed a lot since the 1970's last time l went there was 2001 still a impressive country. It is nice to hear from you again that would take quite sometime to upload the film on youtube there is a scene on there already just not far from the end.

Posted on Oct 07 2009 17:21 Hey Matt: I assume you meant you were trying to track down "....Darkness...", (remembering it was made in France), and finally got a copy. Really glad to hear it. I was even fantasizing uploading it to YouTube if you hadn't!! LOL. Of course, that would take alot of time, but maybe one day! Oh Lord: HMV. That, Tower Records and Virgin don't exist anymore, (Virgin left N.Y. months ago). I still get so angry when I read the review of "...Darkness..." on 'Time Out', and re-read our comments. I think we all taught him a lesson - the moron! LOL. I always think of you when I watch it. It really remains an astonishingly wonderful movie - the fear gets right into your gut. Take care Matt. Good to talk again. Fran

Posted on Oct 07 2009 13:03 I had a bit of difficulty trying to find out what the name of this film was called l remembered it well i went through a lot of French made films as l knew it was made in France went into shops like HMV eventally l went on to lmdb and typed in The Vanishing and left a question on there and someone replied i typed in And Soon The Darkness and then l remembered it l managed to track down a copie from a shop in Surrey in August 2007 and it came through 3 days later. It is a unusual film but still rivetting.

Posted on Oct 07 2009 02:48 Hi Matt! Hope you're well, and nice to see your latest comment. Can you believe it's been a year since our "...Darkness" comments!!! About the remake of the movie: I wouldn't even bother seeing it. It's like remaking "Psycho". If it ain't broke, don't fix it. And BTW, I watched ".....Darkness...." just two nights ago. It still chills, will always be a gem and will never get old. Take care. Til' next year. Fran

Posted on Oct 03 2009 23:35 Disagree with the reviewer who seems to have just paraphrased other reviews. It's a great film, atmospheric and not a little chilling. It is also a product of its time and none the worse for that; I love all the old vehicles, some memories of the days when the French motor industry created interesting products.

Posted on Dec 19 2008 17:45 Hi Rod: Along with Matt, you are another coinneseur of this wonderful movie. You hit the nail on the head with your comments: "very atmospheric, playing on our darkest fears, with no special effects." And totally agree: the reviewer wrote like he/she was just out of high school, without any intellectual insight to the power and genius of what this little film did to us viscerally. NO ONE can take his comments seriously! Hope you found the movie. I taped it on late-night TV in 1986 - uncut - and have seen it countless times. This movie is one of those little-known gems. Cheers.

Posted on Dec 19 2008 16:59 I wouldnt be writing this if the film had had some fascinating impact on me when I saw it back in the 70's. I have been trying to track this down for ages. Very atmospheric. Reminiscent of how quiet and distant France can be to the traveller. Yes its obviously dated but I cant wait to see again. The Time Out review should not be taken seriously. Its a great movie playing on our darkess fears with no special effects.
