While the servants gossip below stairs, Dietrich flirts enigmatically between her suave English diplomat husband (Marshall) and a beguiling American old flame (Douglas). Characteristically dry Lubitsch sophistication, not much liked at the time but since hailed by enthusiasts as one of his masterpieces. To the less committed, Dietrich - caressingly photographed by Charles Lang in a manner that doesn't quite make the Sternberg grade - bats her eyelashes once too often and twice too coyly.Author: TM
