August in the Water (1995)
Director: Sogo Ishii
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
After the appearance of a new black hole and the fall to earth of two meteorites, a city in Fukuoka suffers both a major drought and an epidemic of a strange disease which causes human inner organs to petrify. A boy working on the languages of fish starts dating a girl with the makings of a diving champion. But she nearly dies in a mysterious diving accident and emerges from hospital somehow changed, knowing that she has to find one of the meteors. The extraordinary climax brings it all together: the drought, the water, the flesh, the stone. Touches the parts ordinary acid doesn't reach.Author: TR
