Tony Au's over-designed melodrama is a vehicle for Rouge star Anita Mui, set (like the much less interesting Kawashima Yoshiko) amid the Sino-Japanese conflicts of the 1930s. Here she plays a night-club singer torn between the Chinese guerrilla who once abandoned her and a humane Japanese officer. It's one of those movies in which the script's determination to provide a murder or explosion every few minutes allows no space for character development or emotional depth. The ending in post-war Japan is the only scene in the whole two hours that isn't numbingly obvious.Author: TR
