Zorba the Greek (1965)
Director: Michael Cacoyannis
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The dreadful movie (from the novel by Nikos Kazantzakis) that launched a million package tours: timid writer Bates falls spellbound to the outsize folkloric 'charm' of Quinn's philosophically boisterous Cretan Character, a role he's revamped with minor cultural compensations in almost every one of his films since.Author: PT

- Posted on Jun 11 2008 03:38 Disregard the sour mini-review by Timeout's myopic film critic. This is the role Anthony Quinn was born to play--the exuberant Life Force who refuses to yield to the ravages of age. Alan Bates is excellent as the wimpy writer who knows books but fears life's turmoil. Lila Kedrova is briliant as an aging courtesan. The score is lively, the cinematography artfully captures Crete, but most importantly there are a clutch of poignant and of comic scenes that illuminate elemental themes regarding love, mortality, manhood, aging, and coming of age. You might be too young for this movie, or, alas, too soul-dead for this gem of a film.

- Posted on Apr 14 2008 02:32 This is one of those unforgetable movies I've ever seen. You can watch this movie over and over again, experiencing the same thrill each time. The cast did a superb performance. Without a doubt, it is one of the finest movies made!

If you like black and white 60s movies with uptight english Alan Bates learning how get less uptight with Anthony Quinn chewing up the scenery and hamming it up, you'll love this.
I know I did!
Open up a bottle of Greek Red, settle down with a kebab and enjoy!
