This Above All (1942)
Director: Anatole Litvak
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Companion piece to Mrs Miniver which contrives to take all the edge off Eric Knight's novel (a surprising bestseller for 1941) about a working class soldier who deserts because he feels the ruling classes are conspiring to preserve the status quo. Played by Power (as much like a Yorkshire tyke as a Borzoi), carefully established as heroic before he deserts, he suffers more of a spiritual crisis than a political revelation. Not that it matters, since he meets a WAAF (Fontaine) who is true blue (and proves it with one of the stickiest speeches of uplift to grace the World War II movie scene), is swept up into fulsome romance, and realises what he should be fighting for. Lushly directed crap.Author: TM
