This bleak and impressive Western pitches ruthless, Indian-hating buffalo hunter Taylor ('One less buffalo means one less Indian') against the more sympathetic Granger, who later falls for Indian squaw Paget. The extended massacre scene is chillingly effective, and the film not only condemns the senseless slaughter of bison, but also raises questions about the Western myths of heroism and the pioneering spirit. Russell Harlan's admirably low-key cinematography complements writer/director Brooks' down-beat tone.Author: NF
