The Last Lieutenant (1993)
Director: Hans Petter Moland
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Decent, classy, rather old-fashioned drama about the confusion, divided loyalties and unadulterated fear which beset Norway in 1940 following the unexpected Nazi invasion. It centres on a retired naval lieutenant who, much to his younger colleagues' surprise, enlists in the army and then, when the government surrenders, sets up a resistance force. Nothing hugely original here, but Skjønberg's lead performance is impressive, the film avoids sentimentality, and the account of conflicting notions of collaboration and nationalism is deftly handled.Author: GA
