Sumptuous but turgid biopic of The American Beauty - star of burlesque and light opera from the 1880s - with Fonda and Ameche as her two husbands (she had four, but who's counting?). It comes alive only when Alice Faye sings such standards as 'After the Ball' and 'The Band Plays On'. Nigel Bruce and Claude Allister appear in cameos as Gilbert and Sullivan.Author: TM
