This seductive Hollywood remake of Duvivier's earlier Carnet de Bal can't quite compete with the swoony romantic pessimism that engulfed the '30s French cinema, but as an ersatz exercise in old-school charm it has its moments. Oberon is at the centre of another episodic structure as a New England grande dame reflecting over the string of varied lovers life turned up for her.Author: TJ
