Moving and important, this South African film explores that country’s HIV crisis through the experience of a young woman, Yesterday (Khumalo), who lives in a remote village and whose husband works away in a Johannesburg mine most of the time. Interestingly, Roodt (‘Sarafina!’, ‘Cry the Beloved Country’) chose to make his film in the Zulu language, so giving it a chance (however small) of being seen by those in South Africa who most need to see it: poor black South Africans, who remain largely excluded from their small but burgeoning film culture for economic and historical reasons.Author: DCa
