The raw material of this mopey Sundance winner is otherwise promising: a dual narrative that straddles the present-day tribulations of Perry (Mackie), a struggling gay African-American painter, and the heady, pioneering era of the Harlem Renaissance. But writer-director Evans might have done better to choose one thread or the other. His b&w period re-creations draw the already somnambulant Mackie into deadening spells of glassy-eyed nostalgia.
