Cinévardaphoto (2004)
Director: Agnès Varda
Movie review
From Time Out New York
Viewers might find themselves scratching their noggins over why Agnès Varda's three disparate shorts—"Ydessa, the bears and etc..." (2004), "Ulysse" (1982) and "Salut Les Cubains" (1962)—have been turned into one documentary du jour. The film's compounded title, however, offers a clue to the triptych's underlying theme: Varda's own relationship to the mediums of film and photography themselves. Taken together, Cinévardaphoto's whole is stronger than the sum of its parts, revealing the autobiography of an artist chasing personal memories through her art.Author: DF
