This lo-fi rock and roll tale is adapted from an autobiographical musical by LA musician and tattoo artist Cheri Lovedog whose band, Clamdandy, lingered in obscurity for two decades. Here, Jacki (Gina Gershon) is our narrator and focus: a rocker in her late 30s who plays the Sunset Strip with her fellow all-girl, mainly lesbian bandmates (‘Shame we missed that whole Riot Grrrl thing by about a butt-hair’). With sex, drugs and dodgy lyrics aplenty, the film aspires to rock authenticity but is marred by sloppy writing and acting so that it feels like a skewed, clichéd take on reality.
