The men in Jessica Sanders's devastating documentary must have felt like Kafka's Joseph K.: Each of them was arrested without warning and incarcerated for crimes they didn't commit. Only years later did the advent of DNA testing make it possible for them to return to civilian life. In Sanders's straightforward film, it becomes painfully clear that it's hard to live a successful third act when you've been robbed of a second one. Still these ex-cons try to move forward: None of the subjects seems totally defeated, but neither do they seem like they'll ever be completely liberated.Author: DD'A
