Emmanuel's Gift (2005)
Director: Lisa Lax, Nancy Stern
Movie review
From Time Out New York
Emmanuel Ofosu Yeboah was born in Ghana with a severely deformed right leg. But rather than turn into a street beggar-the role traditionally reserved for Ghana's handicapped people-he triumphs through a series of physical and emotional challenges (including a countrywide bicycle ride) that would seem difficult for anyone, disabled or not. While it's impossible to find fault with a determined and terribly endearing young man overcoming adversity, the filmmakers have packed this documentary full of so many Hallmark moments that what ought to be a serious and inspiring portrait comes off as an extended Oprah segment. So it's probably a good thing, then, that Winfrey is the film's primary narrator.Author: MT
