Tenacious D in 'The Pick of Destiny' (2006)
Director: Liam Lynch
Synopsis
Jack Black and Kyle Gass star as themselves in the tale of two aspiring musicians who form the rock band Tenacious D. When Little JB is forced to leave home to escape his rock ‘n’ roll hating father (Meatloaf), he sets off for Hollywood, where he meets fellow musician Kyle. After a shaky start to their friendship, the pair join forces and Tenacious D is born. In their desperate bid to gain ‘Rock God’ status, Jack and Kyle embark upon a quest to find the mystical ‘Pick of Destiny’.
Movie review
From Time Out London
If there were a gap in the market for a film which existed purely because two guys thought to rhyme the words ‘we fuckin’ rock’ with ‘suck my cock’, this is that film. ‘The D’ are egregious comic behemoth Jack Black and his buffoonish sidekick Kyle Gass – a comedy rock duo whose music is an ironic mix of hair metal and medieval prog windbaggery. This cartoonish biopic of the band takes the plot of ‘The Blues Brothers’ and the characters from ‘Bill and Ted’ and sends them on an acid-fuelled jaunt to find a magic guitar pick fashioned from a chipped tooth of the devil, and while Black clings tightly to his ‘School of Rock’ schtick, Gass comes across like an old buddy to whom Black now somehow owes a career. Clearly intended to be viewed through a haze of marijuana smoke, it’d be against the law for us to recommend this film. So we won’t.Author: David Jenkins
