Synopsis

Captain Jack and shipmates are back in the third (and dare we say final) 'Pirates' installment.

Movie review

From Time Out London

The sea-cow gets another milking in the third outing of the outrageously profitable ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ series. This time they’re brawling in Singapore, playing politics at a summit of pirate lords and blasting cannon across whirlpools. I’d love to give you a better idea of the movie’s plot, but I genuinely have no idea what it is. You’re certainly expected to have full recall of the previous instalment, so if you didn’t see that, forget it. I did see it, but didn’t understand it at the time and certainly have no clue ten months on why Bill Nighy’s squid-faced Davy Jones is in league with the beastly tea-swilling Brits, what Johnny Depp’s antically flouncing Jack Sparrow is doing cavorting with dozens of himself in a ‘Being John Malkovich’-lite netherworld, or why we’re expected to give a ship’s rat’s arse how Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley’s ongoing joint mission to out-wet the ocean is going. Don’t get me wrong, I’ve quite a soft spot for non-narrative popcorn fodder, as long as it’s spectacular and offers a basic idea of what’s at stake and who I should root for. Here, however, the action is messy and repetitive and the story-shaped hole is plugged by a slew of compacts and betrayals whose number is outstripped only by their unfathomability. It lasts about three hours and has about three funny bits, and Keith Richards’ cameo as Sparrow père is not among them. The poor chap barely seems able to move his features – perhaps they should have used the wonderful CGI that gives Nighy a faceful of tentacles to give Richards an expression or two.

Posted on Jul 05 2007 12:07 I agree with the above... if you dont like fantasy adventure films dont bother goin to see them and defeinitely DONT criticise them! Keira was really good in this one much betta than usul and it was funny and Depp was brilliant. yes there were alot of twists and the story line is complicated to grasp if u aint seen the other 2 but still this film still kicks butt! All you boring people sod off!

Posted on Jul 05 2007 12:01 Come on people! where is your imagination, why do people have to try and rationalise everything that goes on in a film? Pirates are legends, and from a much more exciting time period so why try and make it practical? This film is fantastic and for you people who dont understand why Davy Jones is in league with the Brits... watch the other films! He is under their command because they have his heart... its a legend that whoever has the heart of Davy Jones comands the sea and can make him do whatever they want! the effect are brilliant the story is full of laughs and i enjoyed every minute of it... on yer bikes those of you to dull and practical to enjoy it!!!

Posted on Jul 04 2007 15:28 The only reason this has one star is because i can't give any lower. I got dragged along to this film and it did nothing to convince me to watch it. It was awful and i was bored to death for the ridiculous amount of time it goes on for.

Posted on Jul 03 2007 13:41 What happened to plots? It just seems as if it is made up as it goes along... great effects though.

Posted on Jul 03 2007 11:32 The really frustrating part of this movie is that even with the way too many plot lines, way too many fail to be resolved, most notably we have all this pathos developed for Davey Jones and the apparent relationship with Casseopeia and then its just dumped. Quite frankly there's about 20 minutes of time that could have been dumped there and then if they were never going to resolve that issue anyway!
This film is way too long and then goes on for an extra hour (long after yor butt has gone to sleep) and as soon as the credits roll, you can't wait to get moving but the funny thing is that I'm informed that there is a post credits scene. Who on Earth can bare to sit through that entire film and wait till the end of the credits? Who I ask you?

Posted on Jul 02 2007 13:58 I love pirates one, two and three. I guess you maybe have to like them to understand what is going on. This film is awesome except for keira and orlando who are soft and spoil the piratey atmosphere with their stupid speaches even though they would never actually pass as pirates.. See this film!!

Posted on Jul 02 2007 08:42 Excellent family fun film with entertainment all the way through. Anyone with an imagination is kept on the edge of their seats watching all 3 of the films. I just hope there's another to follow.
