Synopsis

This sequel to the hit comedy ‘Bruce Almighty’ sees the spotlight shift from newsreader Bruce to his arch enemy Evan Baxter. Now a Congressman, Baxter and his family relocate to Virginia, where Evan’s life is turned upside down by a visit from God. The big man tells him to build an ark in preparation for a great flood, a request that’s easier said than done.

Movie review

From Time Out London

One of the funniest things about ‘Bruce Almighty’ was Steve Carell’s uptight newsreader Evan Baxter – but don’t expect this sequel to be wall-to-wall laughs. Here, Evan has been elected as a congressman and trots off to Washington DC with his wife and kids in tow. Everything looks rosy for the super-slick Evan: there’s a big new house, a fantastic office and a healthy pay packet. But he wasn’t banking on God (Morgan Freeman) making an appearance and asking him to build an ark, thereby exposing him to ridicule from all comers. Gradually, Evan is forced to submit to God’s request and ends up a long-haired laughing stock – but possibly the one man who could save the city from an impending flood.

So, wife, kids, animals coming two by two: this is family-friendly comedy, more ‘Cheaper By The Dozen’ than the relatively grown-up ‘Bruce Almighty’. Evan’s attempts to avoid God’s message are initially amusing as pairs of animals start to pop up everywhere and he find himself unable to shave off his sprouting beard. But moments like the latter will have both theologians and believers frowning: surely looking like a Biblical character isn’t the point? This is, in theory, about the environment, political corruption, one man standing up to the establishment – and the Christian faith. But it’s done with such a safe, cautious hand that it fails to deliver many laughs past the obvious. There is a flash of excitement when the flood comes, despite the dodgy CG. And peripheral characters such as John Goodman’s corrupt congressman and Jonah Hill’s research nerd intermittently amuse. But ‘Evan Almighty’ misses so many tricks, it ultimately misses the mark. Posted on Aug 17 2007 15:23 I agree wholeheartedly with Stephen, 6.8.07, what is the matter with people today? Their spelling and grammar is outrageous and they should be ashamed! Yes indeed stop watching rubbish films and get back to learning basics like english grammar and spelling that will really help you in life!

Posted on Aug 17 2007 10:10 I am amazed at these bad reviews, after all this is a kids movie. My husband and I took our 10 and 6 year olds and all four of us loved it, lots of laughs and silly stuff going on, and isn't that what you want from a comedy??? maybe the the rest of you expect too much from a movie and have forgotten that it's just a bit of fun and entertainment.

Posted on Aug 16 2007 12:35 This is a very poor attempt at a sequel to a film which stood up on it's own well enough. Why they decided to make this is beyond me, I went with some mates (we were all 10-13 year-olds) and it maybe got a giggle once off one person; I was reluctant to go but I'm glad I did now, I can tell the world about it's mediocrity!
I gets two stars off me because it doesn't quite reach as low as Cheaper By The Dozen 2 or Big Momma's House 2, but don't get me wrong; it's still a bad film.

Posted on Aug 15 2007 15:02 it is a great film it isn't as good as bruce almighty but i think it is very funny! i don't think they could of made it funnier. every second is brillant. in my book it is one of the best films i have seen in a while. i think it is also a great film because of the meaning behind it ,the tale of when god built the ark. i would say it is a must see!!!
