Movie review

From Time Out London

This sequel to family road trip comedy 'Are We There Yet?' is a remake of 1948’s ‘Mr Blandings Builds His Dream House’ – but Ice Cube is no Cary Grant. While the ‘Barbershop’ series successfully cast Cube as the straight man, this sees him reprising his role as blundering, pratfalling Nick, and neither he nor the script are up to the job. Nick and new wife Suzanne (Long) move into a big house in the country with her children, somehow failing to notice that it’s falling apart at the seams. The structure of the film is far more predictable: brief expositionary exchanges are routinely interrupted by slapstick accidents. As the house begins to collapse, so do Nick’s relationships, but it’s hard to care. Almost saving the day is John C McGinley as a suspiciously cheerful estate agent with a monopoly on local handyman contracts. His manic turn should be just enough to save watching parents from total despair - let’s just hope the kids find burping raccoons and crumbling ceilings hilarious.
