Robin Williams is a priest who ruins a happy couple’s relationship – and does his best to ruin this romantic comedy. Sadie (Mandy Moore) and Ben (John Krasinski) are a pleasant, if familiar couple: he goofy and well-meaning, she the friendly girl next door. They plan to marry in three weeks and mistakenly sign up for Reverend Frank’s pre-nuptial course. His purpose is to drive a wedge between the couple to make sure they can weather the storms: a cynical premise and one that’s totally unengaging. There’s no doubting that Sadie and Ben will unite in the end, and Reverend Frank’s laboured schemes provide a tiresome obstacle. He’s a smug control freak who bugs their apartment, bans them from sex and even forces Sadie to drive blindfolded. Most of his schemes are illegal, and Williams is annoying. And yet the film hails Frank as some kind of hero. Sharp comedy writing gives rise to some laugh-out-loud scenes, making this a sporadically funny watch, but the plot is so wrong-footed it beggars belief.

Posted on Aug 24 2007 10:36 this is an absolutely fantastic film not only is it amazingly funny but amused both myself and my children! the reverand is so evil me and my children thoroughly enjoyed the whole film. the outtakes at the end just added that little bit more comedy!

Posted on Aug 20 2007 21:18 One of the worst films I've seen for some time - it was so laboured and obvious which bits were supposed to be 'hilarious'. I can only assume the outakes at the end (which really only show the cast falling about laughing) were as a result of them laughing with relief the whole thing was over. I don't often feel moved to write stuff like this - that's how bad I thought it was! I wish I'd gone to watch Hairspray again.

Posted on Aug 19 2007 21:47 One of the worst films I've ever seen. Would have walked out if my daughter wasn't enjoying it. She's 10. Funniest bit was the outakes at the end. Don't bother.
