Prom Night (2008)
Director: Nelson McCormick
Movie review
From Time Out London
By far the worst ‘slasher movie’ remake to date, replaying all the clichés, but delivering none of the guilty pleasures. The 1980 original had ‘scream queen’ Jamie Lee Curtis, some disco dancing, an axe-wielding psycho in a black ski mask, and sundry gory deaths. TV director Nelson McCormick’s tedious ‘re-imagining’ has Brittany Snow (wasted here), Britney Spears’ ‘Piece of Me’, a knife-wielding killer in a baseball cap, a string of bloodless, off-screen deaths and an inexplicably harsh 15 certificate.Three years after high school teacher Richard Fenton became obsessed with student Donna Keppel (Snow), then slaughtered her whole family, she is off the medication and excited about her senior prom. But Fenton has escaped from the asylum and Detective Winn (Idris Elba) knows he’ll kill anyone who stands between him and the object of his twisted affections. But frankly, who cares? The characters could be dispatched in any order, and it wouldn’t make an iota of difference.
