From Time Out Online

The icy landscape of upstate New York is the setting for this thriller about the risks a mother will take to put food on the table for her kids. Desperate for money after her gambling-addicted husband goes AWOL with their savings, store clerk Ray accepts cash from a local Mohawk woman to drive across the frozen Saint Lawrence river into Canada and smuggle Chinese immigrants back over the border. This soon becomes a regular gig, and slowly the disdain and distrust the women feel towards each other turns into mutual understanding and even friendship. Melissa Leo and Misty Upham are outstanding as the two leads, portraying the desperate but determined women with unfussy empathy. A deserved winner of this year’s Grand Jury Prize at Sundance.
