Movie review

From Time Out Online

Hong – arguably Korea’s finest filmmaker of the last decade or so – makes his first feature away from home, chronicling the experiences of a middle-aged painter who holes up in a seedy Parisian hostel, anxious that he’ll be arrested for smoking dope if he returns to Korea. His desultory wanderings bring him into contact with a variety of other expats, including an old flame and an art-student and her flatmate who distract him from thoughts of his wife back in Seoul…

Hong’s characteristically wry, astute dissection of the male psyche is perhaps a little overlong, but the leisurely pace fits both the gentle, compassionate tone and the overall directionlessness of the protagonist. If you don’t know Hong’s work, this is a good place to start; and if you enjoy Rohmer’s films, you’ll be perfectly comfortable here.
