The Uninvited (2009)
Director: The Guard Brothers
Movie review
From Time Out London
By straightening out Ji-woon Kim’s Korean horror movie, ‘A Tale of Two Sisters’, the Guard Brothers have made it more coherent and psychological, yet less dislocated and disturbing. Fresh from psychiatric hospital, Anna (Emily Browning) is welcomed home by her rebellious sister Alex (Arielle Kebbel) and recently bereaved father (David Strathairn). The latter is receiving therapy from the late mother’s live-in nurse, Rachel (Elizabeth Banks). Sadly, the sisters’ conspiratorial closeness is undercut here by a superfluous suitor, Matt (Jesse Moss), who claims to know the truth about the night Anna’s mother died. The sisters suspect their step-mother, but what looks like a standard ‘home invasion’ scenario skews off into a world of hallucinatory dreams, body parts and floating ghosts. As in the original, the film slyly manipulates the audience’s perspective, and a brilliantly filmed climactic ‘reveal’ marks this British duo as a pair to watch.
