Another very solid and casually complex work from Téchiné which thankfully refuses to sell short its beautifully played central drama – of impulsive young Jeanne (Dequenne in her strongest performance since ‘Rosetta’) and her inability to connect with anyone or anything – in favour of sermonising or finger pointing. Split into two long chapters – ‘Circumstances’ and ‘Consequences’ – the film details Jeanne’s troubled romance with amateur wrestler Franck (Duvauchelle), her relationship with her mother (Deneuve) and their subsequent re-acquaintance with a family friend who is now a respected lawyer specialising in race crimes. Boiled down, the film is about instability – both psychological and political – but it’s equally interested in the trials that Jeanne has to overcome in order to blossom into a discerning and astute adult.Author: David Jenkins
