Love Aaj Kal (2009)
Director: Imtiaz Ali
Movie review
From Time Out London
Have Indian attitudes towards love remained constant throughout the ages? That is the central question posed in this glossy bollyromcom which draws inspiration from Taiwanese film, ‘Three Times’. London based couple, Jai (Saif Ali Khan) and Meera (Deepika Padukone), decide on an amicable break up. He moves to San Francisco; she returns to Delhi. Will they eventually realise the folly of their decision? The slick proceedings are generally restrained and unsentimental by Bollywood standards. The beautiful leads inject much charm into this urban fairy tale. However, the frequent nostalgic flashbacks designed to compare present day mores with those of the past is self-indulgent and ends up as a showcase for every touristy site of the Indian capital. Ultimately, the overall effect is underwhelming, undemanding and alienating.Author: Anil Sinanan

- Posted on Jan 16 2010 23:15 beautifully made film which shows that love transcends time. attitudes and lifestyles may change but the basic human emotion of love remains exactly the same. the reminiscent scenes from punjab were very nicely done and very romantic. acting and music were enticing. my movie of the year 2009

- Posted on Aug 21 2009 12:30 Didn't know what to expect as didn't hear the best of reviews. Went with an open mind. Film started off different to other films, Saif's acting was weak as the guy from london/usa, I preferred his acting as the guy in Punjab - he portrayed this role extremely well given the circumstances he was in. I could definitely watch it again - in fact am going again this evening. I guess each to their own taste. Deepike has a natural flair to acting and really played her role well, you can understand her strength and her pain too. Beautiful film about love today and as we knew yesterday.

- Posted on Aug 12 2009 16:16 Not a very good effort at all. Weak acting by deepika. And the scenes kept changing from india to London to San Francisco and then London then Punjab........songs were the only good thing about it really.

Loved the idea of finding the raisond'etre for modern love by checking out old romance: all the chracters were well etched and the self realisation beautifully executed.
Critics should sit through it twice to understand the experimental style - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Aug 03 2009 18:28 In reality this is a 2* film, The film is mounted on too grand a scale for what is actually a deeply intimate story of two people falling in and out of love. Ultimately not as good as Imtiaz Ali's previous two films. Disappointing.
