Max Embarrassing (2008)
Director: Lotte Svendsen
Movie review
From Time Out Online
Craving the approval of the cool kids, outgrowing old friends and learning to accept his unconventional family for what it is, Max is in that awkward limbo between childhood and the adult world and he’s plagued with a vivid imagination that makes unbearable the cringeworthy moments of his schooldays. His mum doesn’t help, her laid-back approach to housekeeping and interminable ramblings causing our protagonist maximum humiliation when his crush, Ofelia, comes to visit. This understated tale explores the agonies of teen friendships, loyalty and identity in multicultural Denmark with an unsentimental eye and subtle humour that makes its New Year’s Eve party finale – complete with reconciliations and a first kiss in the snow – all the more palatable.Author: Natasha Polyviou
