This was meant to mark the triumphant big-screen debut of Matt Smith of ‘Doctor Who’. But several dispiriting festival screenings and one fanboy-friendly name change from ‘Womb’ later, this dour and icy sci-fi melodrama limps into cinemas. It’s the tale of Rebecca (Eva Green), whose devastation at the death of her soulmate Tommy (Smith) leads her to impregnate herself with his genes and give birth to an exact copy. The film has a number of problems: the style, tone and subject matter are reminiscent of ‘Never Let Me Go’, which hardly set the box office alight. Moreover, the subject matter is never adequately explored: writer-director Benedek Fliegauf is more interested in a half-formed attack on social injustice than the more interesting emotional core of the situation. Most damningly, the acting – Green excepted – is awful. So despite a fascinating concept, a gorgeous look and a silky score, ‘Clone’ is difficult to warm to.

Posted on May 02 2012 11:37 Loved the intelligent 'feel' of the site which I agree was very Ishagori but apart from the ghastly Oedipus implications there were many mysteries: how did nerdy Tommy (appallingly acted) drive Rebecca so insane with love and desire and was he driving a left hand drive jeep in mainland UK (?) which proved to be his undoing. Perhaps he forgot! Magic filming and terrific moody atmosphere from every viewpoint (except Matt Smith's) .

Posted on Apr 01 2012 05:56 I was oddly fascinated and Very repulsed. Wanting to clone someone, give birth to them, and then become their lover when that person grows up is pretty freaky. I kept worrying she would out and out molest him when he was still growing up. I remain convinced though that she is entirely inapropriate throughtout the film after Tommy the firsts death.

Posted on Jan 13 2011 17:44 Ignore the Time Out review - it's clearly a film that will divide opinion. I thought it was great. One of the most enjoyable at the festival for me. If you tend to align your opinion with that of time out, you'll probably hate it too. But if you try and watch and enjoy films without having been influenced by hype or preconception, you may end up loving it, as I did.

Posted on Oct 21 2010 02:58 Dr Who bangs Vesper Lynd, who is also his mum. Still, at least they left room for a sequel.
