Movie review

From Time Out Online

Based on a real-life legal scandal, this adaptation of a book by bailiff Alain Marécaux about his terrible trials and tribulations following his wrongful arrest, along with his wife, for their alleged participation in the rapes perpetrated by a group of paedophiles makes for powerful and unsettling cinema. Unsettling because, however meagre (or non-existent) the evidence against him, Marécaux (brilliantly played by Torreton) and his lawyer just can't get him out of prison; for years on end, his life seems like a nightmare dreamed by Kafka. So determined is the bailiff a hitherto happy husband and father to prove his innocence that he almost dies doing so, but in the end the movie feels less like 'Hunger' than a pacy muck-raking drama made by a latterday (but slightly more restrained) Sam Fuller. Strong stuff.
