Movie review

From Time Out Online

This US indie offering aims for character comedy with a homely touch, but falls down badly because the characters aren’t that fascinating and the comedy barely raises a smirk. Rachael Harris is amenable enough as the God-fearing churchgoer with needs that her repressed marriage isn’t satisfying, but as the script sends her across country to retrieve the son she never knew her devout hubby had fathered, the entrance of Matt O’Leary as a white-trash ex-junkie loser sets the whole story on an unremarkable odd-couple trajectory. Somehow we’re supposed to find this shambling scruffbag’s antics endearing, but he’s so exasperating it swiftly puts the kibosh on writer-director Pickering’s gestures towards redemptive romance. ‘Natural Selection’ suggests there are more pressing demands on your festivalgoing time.
