The Snows of Kilimanjaro (2011)
Director: Robert Guédiguian
Movie review
From Time Out Online
Guédiguian and his usual actors are back on their home turf of L’Estaque with a stirring story about a union rep (Daroussin) so stalwart in his socialist beliefs that he insists he is made redundant along with his fellow dockers. But just as he’s learning to enjoy his early retirement, a shocking event occurs that sorely tests not only his own sympathies for some of his fellow-men but also, eventually, the feelings his friends and family have for him. It would be easy to fault the film for its sentimentality and its occasionally contrived plotting, but somehow its insistence on weighing up vengeance and justice, passions and ideals, responsibility and forgiveness pays off, and the film succeeds both as ethical enquiry and as populist, politically intelligent drama.Author: Geoff Andrew
