Movie review
From Time Out London
Older viewers of last month’s Bafta ceremony were doubtless flummoxed when Adam Deacon (‘Anuvahood’) beat the likes of Tom Hiddleston to the public-voted Rising Star Award. This drab urban morality tale won’t answer their questions, though it’s a reasonable showcase for Deacon’s wiry charms. He plays Jerome, a footballer enjoying the high life: Ferrari, Canary Wharf loft, his pick of the totty at Mahiki. Lest we be fooled by the rocks that he’s got, however, we regularly drop in on the council estate where his proud mum still resides, and where friend turned gang leader Baron (David Ajala) is all too willing to blackmail Jerome into sharing the wealth.
Here the story dithers for almost an hour, with the talented Nichola Burley wasted as a soft-nosed journalist who falls for Jerome. First-time director Danny Donnelly, better known for his work in the music industry, ensures there’s enough juddering dubstep on the soundtrack to drown out his pedestrian dialogue.
