Ararat's best feature is probably its location. Envious of the success of the nearby Empress Zoe, the young Turkish owners of Ararat recruited the same architect, Nicos Papadakis, to revamp their 12-room guesthouse.
If the results aren't quite as inspired, the Ararat still breaks the mould, with marbled walls and an orange and ochre colour scheme that works well with the dark, stained-wood floors.
Rooms vary widely in terms of size and comfort - some are small with little light, while others have wooden four-posters with wonderful views of Sultanahmet Mosque. Breakfast is served on the roof terrace.
