The hotel is partly set in a magnificent 19th-century palace on the Bosphorus, built for Sultan Abdülaziz, an ill-fated ruler who killed himself wi th a pair of scissors. In 1908, the palace became the seat of parliament, but burned down two years later.
In 1986, following an ambitious restoration, parts of the original complex were incorporated into this luxurious, 313-room extravaganza belonging to the Kempinski chain. Only 11 suites are in the palace itself - including the ş30,000-a-night Sultan's suite (breakfast included) - along with the Tuĸra restaurant, which showcases Ottoman cuisine, and other public rooms.
All other bedrooms are in the annex. Non-residents can enjoy the hotel's art and culture programme, which includes art exhibitions. There are free classical concerts held on the first and last Saturday of every month (call to reserve). In summer, take advantage of the stunning outdoor infinity pool, which appears to flow into the Bosphorus.
