Otherwise known as St Mary of the Mongols, this 13th-century church was erected in honour of Princess Maria, daughter of Emperor Michael VIII, who was married off to the khan of the Mongols. It was reputedly spared conversion into a mosque thanks to a Greek architect employed by Mehmet II; a decree issued by the Conqueror to this effect has pride of place in the church.
