Originally an ancient sanctuary of Artemis, the first church was built over the 'life-giving spring' here in the early Byzantine era. Destroyed and rebuilt many times, the present structure dates from 1833. The shrine itself is a pool containing 'sacred' fish, said to have leapt into the spring from a monk's frying pan on hearing him say that a Turkish invasion of Constantinople was as likely as fish coming back to life.
