Leave your preconceptions of international chain hotels in the atrium lobby. This Park Hyatt in Şişli is one of a new generation of large, corporate-looking hotels that are responding to the boutique phenomenon. Converted from what used to be the Italian Embassy in Ottoman days, the building is impressive.
Each of the 90 rooms has plenty of space, with modern gadgets for the business traveller. Bathrooms have a steam room, which in cheaper rooms is shared with the shower. Some also have a hamam-style area with heated marble floors. Other nice touches include a filtered water sink, alongside a regular one, iPod docks and deep stand alone baths.
Photos from Ara Güler, known as the 'Eye of Istanbul', are hung around the hotel. In the lobby is a wine lounge, but more impressive is the Terrace, with a small pool. The Prime restaurant serves flawless steaks and seafood, grilled in the open kitchen, alongside an impressive, but not cheap, wine list.
