In the 1980s, the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association reconstructed this row of nine clapboard houses dating from the 19th century. They were painted in pastel colours and furnished in period style. Rooms are all painted different colours and most have big brass beds. The setting is a dream: a sloping cobbled lane hidden between the high walls of Topkapı Palace and the back of Haghia Sophia. Breakfast is served in the pretty garden or gazebo of the Konut Evi, a four-storey annexe at the end of the alley. At night, the whole place is lamp-lit. Walt Disney couldn't create more magic.
