Sarniç review

Sarniç, the Turkish word for cistern, takes its name from the fifth-century Byzantine cistern beneath the hotel, which guests can explore from 9am to 6pm. Owned and managed by Eveline Zoutendijk, a feisty Dutch lady (formerly of the Four Seasons chain), Sarniç is a tightly run place with ambitions above its modest appearance. Think free wireless internet, fluffy towels, complimentary toiletries and an in-house massage therapist. The 16 rooms are immaculate. The top-floor terrace makes a scenic setting for breakfast and four-course dinners that showcase regional Turkish cuisine. Zoutendijk, a former Cordon Bleu chef, also organises half-day cookery courses in the hotel kitchen. The hotel is only a few minutes' walk from the Hippodrome.
