Flagship of the Turkish Touring and Automobile Association's fleet of restored Ottoman properties, the 'Green House' enjoys an unrivalled location on a leafy street midway between the Haghia Sophia and Sultanahmet Mosque.
Entering this stately wooden mansion is like stepping on to the set of a 19th-century costume drama. Every room is decked out in reproduction furniture, complete with wood-panelled ceilings, creaky parquet flooring and antique rugs. The Sultan's Suite has its own hamam.
The idyllic garden is one of the highlights, with a pretty pink pond, a fine café and beer garden and the restaurant. With only 19 rooms, booking in advance is essential. Be sure to ask for a room on the first floor, overlooking the cobbled street - with no televisions in the hotel, you'll want the view. The beer garden is a great spot for a drink, especially after a visit to Hagia Sophia.
