Construction on the mosque began in 1598, but suffered a setback when the architect was executed for heresy. It was eventually completed in 1663, after the classical period of Ottoman architecture had passed. It is nonetheless a regal structure, particularly uplifting seen floodlit from a taxi after a night on the town. The fact that it is so obviously a working mosque tends to keep visitors at bay, but nobody objects to non-Muslims entering.
