Despite winning a record number of Turkish league championships and having the deepest pockets of any Turkish team, Fener's European record is weak. Atatürk's favourite team, Fenerbahçe has historic links with the Turkish army, despite its decidedly unmilitary nickname -'the Canaries'. The home stadium is in the wealthy suburb of Fenerbahçe, on the Asian side.
