Dama Orchestra is looking to give young girls a new role model in the form of Chinese feminist icon Empress Wu, the fiercely independent, ambitious and often intimidating first and only female emperor of China. Having made their mark in the local musical scene with versions of well-loved classics such as ‘Butterfly Lovers’ and ‘I Have a Date With Spring’, Dama Orchestra are now taking on a new challenge with this first original production. Written and directed by Pun Kai Loon, 'Empress Wu – The Musical' will be in English with Mandarin songs featuring lyrics based on classical Chinese poems. Starring Tan Soo Suan as Empress Wu and Alex Koh as Emperor Gaozong, the cast also includes Rachel Tan (who takes on the role of Empress Wu on Aug 19, and the matinee shows on Aug 20 and 21), 12 supporting cast members and 14 ensemble members.
