May 2011

Walk into Brotzeit and you’ll be confronted with surroundings that hum with a tinged golden hue – this is due to the glow coming off a back wall covered with dozens upon dozens of beer bottles. There are block-y type tables and benches upholstered in brown leather and walls full of whimsical illustrations – anthropomorphic animals getting wasted and exclaiming things like ‘prost!’ (the german word for ‘cheers’). It is a delightful look.

You can try weird and wonderful beer mixes, like Russ’n and Affensaft – Weissbiers that respectively taste of mango juice and Sprite. History has seen many different ingredients added to beer and hopefully, more unusual ingredients will start to find their way to our fair city. The list of beers on tap at Brotzeit reads like an amalgamation of coarse German sounding words, all which are rough on the tongue but easy on the stomach. Another plus: the genial wait staff will happily guide you through the dozens of different beers.

Brotzeit is certainly not restricted to beer lovers – wine, schnapps, main courses and tasty pub snacks can be ordered. The cooking is spot on: they serve colossal portions of big-flavoured food designed to soak up the beer. Thick pieces of German bread smeared with crunchy bacon spread and Bavarian crème cheese is exactly the sort of thing you’d want to devour as you work your way through the draft list. We spy the humongous pork knuckle at almost every table and we remind ourselves to try it on our next visit.

It’s a firm favourite with a raucous crowd of German expats and we spy locals downing beer like it’s going out of style. One can only suspect that it will be harder to keep up standards as the brand expands – this Mid Valley branch is the first in Malaysia, having first originated in Singapore – but we hope we’re wrong on that score.
