With all the attention heaped upon Future Music Festival Asia 2013 and Grimes, it’s easy to overlook the fact that Tom Krell is in town as well. Better known by his stage name How to Dress Well, the Chicago-based singer-songwriter first burst onto the scene in 2009 with a series of much hyped about free online EPs, collections of poorly executed home recordings that were given the studio treatment on the brilliant ‘Love Remains’ LP a year later.
Krell’s penchant for cosmic R&B melodies that accentuate his velvety falsetto was also ever present in last year’s sentimental sophomore effort ‘Total Lost’, which spawned silky smooth gems like ‘Cold Nites’ and ‘& It Was U’. How to Dress Well might not have captured the city’s imagination as much as some of his higher profile contemporaries in this action-packed month of music, but his sensual and ethereal brand of contemporary R&B continues to thrill fans of Michael Jackson, Jessie Ware and The xx alike.
