In 1986, The Bangles released hit single ‘Walk like an Egyptian’, but for trance duo Aly & Fila, who hail from the land of the Pharaohs, they really prefer to just dance 2012 away. Kindergarten mates Aly Amr Fathalah and Fadi Wassef Naguib have certainly come a long way since 2003’s highly-rated ‘Eye of Horus’ and a slew of other Ancient Egypt-inspired party numbers, including ‘Spirit of Ka’, ‘Thebes’ and ‘Ankh – Breath of Life’. The pair’s uplifting and melodic ‘We Control the Sunlight’, featuring the vocal prowess of Jwaydan, was voted last year’s number one track on Armin van Buuren’s prominent ‘A State of Trance’ radio show.
Aly & Fila’s stock continues to rise following their sixth appearance at van Buuren’s annual ‘A State of Trance’ event this year, a feat they share with the Dutch turntable maestro and famed German DJ Markus Schulz. Their latest single ‘Coming Home’, which is again backed by Jwaydan’s soulful vocals, picks up where ‘We Control the Sunlight’ left off with another rousing dance floor jam. With an eagerly awaited sophomore album due out later this year, Aly & Fila have the EDM world at their feet, and it won’t be long before everyone does the sand dance. Wong Boon Ken
