Most people choose a hair salon for life – so we break down each hair salons’ specialty for you to make up your mind.

Centro W

  • Mid Valley City
Best for precision cuts
From humble beginnings in Sungei Wang, Centro has become a big, glossy, glamorous salon. Centro has a long history of fashion shows and editorials, and deliver on-trend, fashion-forward haircuts. The salon has also recently introduced a seven-day policy in which you can return after a cut within seven days and have it altered or rejigged.

Best for quick styling and internet access
A-Saloon has mushroomed across the Klang Valley, with a whopping nine outlets and two more imminent openings. They’ve kept with the times – the salon chain is best known for providing free internet access, either via wifi, desktop computers or iPads, one to each station. So if you don’t mind your stylist looking over your shoulder, you can easily Facebook your way through a haircut, keeping your friends and followers apprised of every snip as it happens. A-Saloon is also excellent for their last-minute, affordable styling – book yourself in, find a photo and voila, you can look like Jennifer Lawrence. They do an excellent updo, and you’ll have the facilities to Instagram before and after shots.

Best for Girly K-pop styles
Tumbling waves, pink-tinged tips and braided updos are the name of the game at number76, the city’s latest Japanese import. The brainchild of a KL-based Japanese entrepreneur and a leading Japanese hair stylist, 76style has made a name and a chain for itself across the city. They’ve just opened a second Bangsar branch, bringing their total to five low-key salons with a café feel and plenty of wood. The emphasis is on feminine, natural styles, and if you’re still feeling the ombre look, stylists here have perfected the art. Finish things off with their Ultra Sonic Iron treatment, in which they employ a flatiron-like tool to zap nutrients straight to the core of your follicles.

Best for feeling cool
The celebrity collaboration between Marion Caunter and stylist to the stars Shaun Yap has almost hit its first birthday in its ultra-cool space in Publika. Polished cement floors, dark wood panelling and mirrors absolutely everywhere, this is definitely not your grandmother’s salon. Here the hairdressers take your face shape into serious consideration before breaking out the scissors, so they won’t put a Beyonce ’do on a Miley Cyrus face, for example. If you’re not easily intimidated by cool surroundings or clientele, book yourself in for a cut by Shaun Yap himself. Even if you’re not in the market for a major makeover, the salon’s signature Argan oil treatment is a good pick me up for lacklustre hair.

Best for super-suave pompadours or a set of carefree dreadlocks
Like an old English barbershop, Joe’s is for gentlemen who want a clean and sleek look in a comfortable setting that feels like home. Cuts are achieved with straight razor clippers, unlike in many other salons. Currently, apart from the basic cuts, people are clamouring for the trendy pompadour and the side parting fade. The shop also offers some more unusual styling services in the form of dreadlocks, hair tattoos, cornrows, and hot-towel shaving. Prices of haircuts start from RM20 for adults and RM15 for kids. Have a close, clean shave for RM10 or get a hair tattoo for RM45 to RM90. Joe’s also sells LA’s Suavecito pomade (RM58) as well as stylish fitted caps and snapbacks.
The Met Kuala Lumpur

Best for crazy colour
Started by Randall Wong back in 2006, The Met Kuala Lumpur takes its name from the city it’s most inspired by – New York. The salons are sleek and luxurious, designed to resemble a classic French salon, and stocked with Balmain hair couture products. There are two separate teams for colouring and cutting, and their specialties are really theatrical colour changes, conducted by their professional colourists. If you’re after a scarlet crop or Rihanna-style undercut, this is the place to go – and if you want something a little more natural, the colourists promise a textured, multi-faceted result.

Best for a rebonding treatment for your damaged hair
If you’re a fan of Korean pop music and soap operas or you’re simply the not-so-proud owner of a head of distressed tresses, this is the salon for you. We hear they do great things in rebonding and recovery treatments, seeming to snatch smooth victories from the tangled jaws of frizz. Their cute and feminine styles are perfect for those who admire Girl’s Generation. On the other hand, if you’re looking for something more mature or sophisticated, know that they’ve got your back. Updos are available – perfect for if you’re heading to a wedding dinner or going on an important date. If you still can’t get enough, then sit back and request a manicure.
